Artist Statement
Trained as both a fine art photographer and a geologist, I create photo-geologic composites that merge surface landscapes with the subsurface structures beneath them. Since 2002, my work has explored how the visible world rests upon layered geology shaped over geologic time.
Across the Earth Structures, Urban Foundations, and Altered Ground series, I investigate sites where land use and underlying geology intersect. A city block, a well site, a roadside exposure, or an industrial parcel becomes a point of inquiry. What lies below is stratified rock, fractured bedrock, groundwater pathways, and the imprint of infrastructure introduced in the name of progress.
Each composite is both artistic and investigatory. Field observation, geologic mapping, and photographic documentation inform digitally constructed images that bring surface and subsurface into a single frame. The work invites viewers to reconsider landscape as a layered system shaped by tectonic forces, erosion, engineering, and time.
