Trained as both a fine art photographer and a geologist, Jonathon Wells has created photo-geologic composites since 2002 that merge surface landscapes with the subsurface structures beneath them. Across the Earth Structure, Urban Foundation, and Altered Ground series, he examines sites where land use and underlying geology intersect.
Working at locations around the world, Wells identifies places where the visible landscape suggests a deeper geologic story. Each work reveals the layered relationship between surface conditions and the ground below.
Trained as both a fine art photographer and as a geologist, Jonathon Wells has created scientifically accurate photo-geologic composites with both surface and subsurface views since 2002. He continues to build the existing Location, Environmental, and Extraction series at sites around the world where he identifies a thought-provoking intersection of land use and underlying geology.
