There are a multitude of specialized fields in geology. As a hydrogeologist, my interests have led me to the study of groundwater. This series includes images of rural groundwater well sites—one in the testing phase and one being pumped for a public water supply. Later in my career, as I became concerned about issues of energy and fossil fuels, I was drawn to create the image showing shale gas extraction. We plumb the earth for resources of many types and to many different ends.

I stepped back to see the Appalachian Basin as a whole and the sequence of rock that fills it. This image reveals cycles of uplift, erosion, and burial, with the Marcellus Shale shown as one layer among many—distinct in that it contains natural gas formed deep within the basin.

For more than a decade, I traced the buried history beneath this landscape—through rock outcrops and bedrock encountered in the field. Newark Basin reveals the hidden geologic foundation below and invites reflection on deep time.
